As the various precursors to the Oscars begin to unveil their nominations for various awards, there has been a swelling of predictable anger from the Potter fandom. Why isn’t Potter being nominated? Surely we won’t be forgotten about again? What is going on here?!

The simple truth; the painful truth is this: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part – 2 just doesn’t deserve an Oscar.

Before you S.P.E.W seething anger at me, let me say this. I am one of the biggest Potter fans around. Rowling made me into the avid reader that I am today. The Potter books are inspiration for my own writing. I remember buying the books at midnight and finishing them before breakfast the next day, only to read them twice more before the next week had even started. I love the series.

But just because we love it, it doesn’t justify Academy Awards.

Let’s face this simple truth. As a fandom we can’t even decide whether the films are good. Personally, I’ve been disappointed by all them, including Deathly Hallows Part II. And that’s not a sleight against the actors (I thought in Part II the acting itself was actually terrific). I think they’ve been let down by Kloves’ screenplays and the directing. But that’s not the point. The point is how can you expect the film to win awards if you can’t even convince some of its biggest fans?

Don’t get me wrong, Deathly Hallows Part II is still a good film. But that’s all it is. It’s good. Look at some of its competition. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Drive, Shame, The Artist, The Tree of Life. Those are some fantastic films that are going to fight it out for that top award. Can we really say that Deathly Hallows should win?

And the acting awards? Dan, Emma and Rupert have grown amazingly and the last film have shown how great they have become. But they still paled in comparison to the performances given this year by people like Gary Oldman (who is shunned by the Oscars even more than Potter) and Meryl Streep. Perhaps Alan Rickman is the exception to the rule, perhaps he deserves an Oscar for his great role in the film. But honestly, it is him and he alone that stands a chance.

I’ve read a lot about comparisons to the Return of the King. People say that film swept the Oscars to claim glory for the entire series and Deathly Hallows should do the same. Well, there’s one problem with that comparison as I’ve already noted. Return of the King wasn’t just a good film, it was a fantastic film. It had some of the defining moments of cinema; scenes like the Charge of Pelennor Fields and the sweeping scene as the Beacons were lit will become inspirational to the new generations of filmmakers across the globe.

Can we say the same for Voldermort and his ‘NNNYEEEEEEEAH’ and hugging abilities? Or the borderline slapstick comedy in the middle of an epic fight scene?

I don’t think so.

So here I stand as the bearer of bad news. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 won’t sweep the Oscars. Why? It doesn’t deserve to.
