Dear Evan Hansen will soon be making its way to the silver screen!

According to Variety, the Tony Award winning musical Dear Evan Hansen is getting the movie adaptation treatment thanks to Universal Pictures.

In addition to acquiring the film rights, Universal Pictures has also tapped Stephen Chbosky to direct the upcoming adaptation.

Chbosky, whose past credits include Wonder and The Perks of Being A Wallflower, seems like a great choice for the project — especially given that he’s got some experience bringing Broadway hits to the silver screen.

The writer/director/producer also adapted the screenplay for the big screen adaptation of Rent, which hit theaters back in 2005.

There’s more good news in store for Dear Evan Hansen fans, as sources also told Variety that actor Ben Platt is in early talks to reprise his role for the adaptation.

Platt, who originated the role of Evan Hansen on Broadway, won a Tony for his outstanding performance in the beloved musical.

Other Dear Evan Hansen veterans set to be involved in the adaptation include playwright Steven Levenson, who will pen the script for the film, and lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman) who will executive produce on the project.

Dear Evan Hansen has amassed quite a passionate fanbase since first opening on Broadway back in 2016, so we’re sure fans will rest easy knowing so many of the musical’s creators are involved behind the scenes on the movie.

We’ll be looking forward to keeping up with production news on the film front, as well as crossing our fingers that they’ll be able to bring back some of the OBC to reprise their roles in the movie.
