Deadpool continues to prove that staying true to the source material pays off: It is now the top-grossing R-rated movie of all time!

The Wrap reports that Deadpool has now passed the previous champion, Matrix Reloaded, with a total global boon of $746 million.

This makes it the top-grossing R-rated movie worldwide. And it hasn’t even opened in all countries yet; Japan gets it in June.

As also noted by The Wrap, the Ryan Reynolds-led raunchy superhero movie is well on its way to surpassing American Sniper and The Passion of the Christ too, which would make it the top-grossing R-rated movie domestically, as well.

Not only is it good news for Fox and fans of Deadpool, as sequels and a significant character presence in the X-Force movie(s). We can expect to see a lot more of Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth, and that’s never a bad thing!

It’s also great for fans of comic book adaptations in general, because Deadpool of course isn’t R-rated for sh**s and giggles — it was a creative choice made to honor the source material. It was a gamble, which massively paid off, and we hope the big superhero movie studios are paying attention!

Guardians of the Galaxy directer James Gunn said as much in an open letter, although he did note that studios will probably jump on the R-rated movie bandwagon as opposed to the true-to-the-source-material bandwagon. We’ll just have to wait and see!

At least Ryan Reynolds will return in Deadpool 2, which is slated for 2017. No news yet on release dates for the X-Force franchise, but we’re expecting Fox to be planning that cinematic universe alongside their PG-13 franchise X-Men.

Do you think the massive success of Deadpool is gonna mean good things for the superhero movie industry going forward?
