DC Films is laying out an ambitious future which includes more Superman movies, another try at Green Lantern, and even more R-rated films.

After a few years of floundering, DC Films seems to have finally started to find its footing.

After the commercial and critical disaster that was the Frankenstein-monster’s version of Justice League, the partnership between Warner Bros. and DC Comics has bounced back. It gave fans and moviegoers the bold and bombastic Aquaman, which was the DCEU’s first billion-dollar hit, the family-friendly Shazam, which was a critical hit that made back three times its budget, and the hard R-rated Joker, now the most profitable comic book movie of all time.

Coming up, DC Films has one of the most anticipated superhero movies in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, a movie whose cast draws increasing adulation and excitement every time someone new gets announced. After years of stagnating, Black Adam finally has a release date in 2021, with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the titular character. Finally, DC Films also has two female-led superhero films on the way — the gritty, R-rated female superhero team-up film Birds of Prey and the sequel to the massive success of Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984.

So, given the recent string of successes and the upcoming anticipated successes, what’s next on the docket for DC Films?

According to an exclusive report from Variety, DC Films is prioritizing more R-rated films, spin-off solo films for characters appearing in The Batman and Birds of Prey, and another try at characters that were ill-served by previous attempts.

In its lengthy report with DC Films insiders, Variety stated that, “the studio has become more comfortable with backing comic book movies for adults.” Joker may have been the first R-rated DC film, but Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad 2 will likewise be R-rated, and it seems like we can certainly expect even more.

The report also stated that “key cast members in both The Batman and Birds of Prey have contract options to appear in sequels and standalone films.” Which means we could be getting a Catwoman movie somewhere along the way, and perhaps could one day get a Gotham City Sirens film as well. A fan can certainly hope.

In addition to the R-rated comic book films, DC Films is also looking to revisit characters “they believe were ill-served by previous big screen adventures.” One such example is Green Lantern, as Green Lantern Corps reportedly “remains a priority” despite the Ryan Reynolds 2011 being basically a disaster. Geoff Johns is expected to deliver a script by the end of the year.

Also on the docket is the upcoming Flash movie, which already has a star in Ezra Miller and a director in IT’s Andy Muschietti. DC Films super-writer (and owner of my dream job) Christina Hodson is on lock to finish up that screenplay before moving on to write the screenplay for Batgirl. However, seeing as Ezra miller is involved with the next Fantastic Beasts film, The Flash is unlikely to start filming until 2021.

And what about the Man of Steel himself, Superman? According to the report, it’s unlikely a new Superman film will hit screens before 2023, seeing as there’s no script or director attached. However, that doesn’t mean that DC Films isn’t thinking about it. It’s been reported that there have been discussions with J.J. Abrams, whose company Bad Robot recently signed a massive first-look deal with the studio. There has also been a meeting with Michael B. Jordan earlier this year, in which the actor pitched his idea for it.
