Day Z, the popular zombie survival mod for ARMA II that has arguably surpassed the popularity of its base game, will soon be a standalone product.

The announcement came earlier today via the mods official development blog.

Lead developer Dean Hall will remain project lead, with ARMA developer Bohemia Interactive as publisher.

Hall explains the game will follow a release model similar to Minecraft, as in “fast iterations” and a community alpha available with a “heavily discounted price.”

If you picked up ARMA II during the recent Steam sale for the sole purpose of this mod, fear not, as Hall notes “development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so.”

It was recently revealed the mod currently has over one million players.
