One of the most anticipated characters on this season of The Walking Dead has to be the Governor, but we’ve yet to see him as of the season premiere on Sunday. David Morrissey, who plays the new villain, shares his introduction to the series.

The English actor wasn’t familiar with the comics when he was cast as the Governor on the popular AMC series The Walking Dead, The Huffington Post reports. Watch out for spoilers.

“I avoided the comics for a bit actually. I obviously saw the look of the Governor from the comic, but the first script came in and I liked what they were doing.”

Most actors decide to research their characters as much as possible, gleaning as much information as they can, especially if it’s a character who’s already been written in another medium. Not David Morrissey, though. Apparently he wanted an authentic experience.

“Then I read the comic and it was very different, the thing about the Governor in the comic is that he’s a fully-formed person and what we do with him in the TV series is…he’s not as fully formed when he arrives and then we work on him from then on.”

So does that mean we’ll see a much different Governor than the one in the comics? Will he be less brutal or will we just see his progression into the madman from Robert Kirkman’s original series?

We wonder if Michonne is still going to have her chance to seek revenge on the Governor in the show. Now that would be pretty gruesome.

Glen Mazzara, showrunner for The Walking Dead, reveals that the show is going to go beyond our original group with the introduction of the Governor and Woodbury. Fans of the comics have been waiting for their introductions on the AMC show.

“We’re going to introduce the Governor, we’ve introduced Michonne [Danai Gurira. I just wanted a bigger scope. I just wanted to feel that the whole world had gone to hell and our characters were trapped in it.”

We know they’re already starting to experience the hell he promises, but we assume it will only get worse when the Governor comes to town.
