CBS has announced that David Letterman’s final episode of The Late Show will air Wednesday, May 20.

The news comes just before Stephen Colbert, Letterman’s successor, ends The Colbert Report on Thursday, December 18.

“David Letterman has given to all of us a remarkable legacy of achievement and creative brilliance that will never be forgotten,” said CBS Corp President and CEO Leslie Moonves in a press release Wednesday morning. “It’s going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave’s final broadcast in May.”

CBS will likely leave some sort of gap in between Letterman’s final episode and Colbert’s first show. A start date for Colbert was not shared today.

As noted by CBS, Letterman has been a late night talk show host for 32 years and has been hosting The Late Show for 22 years.

Helpful reminders: Craig Ferguson’s final episode of The Late Late Show is next Friday, December 19. James Corden will begin his run as Late Late host in March 2015.
