David Fincher may have found his next directorial gig, as the Oscar-nominee is in talks to helm the adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl for Fox.

Selling over 2 million copies, Gone Girl tells the story of a woman who mysteriously disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary. Variety reports that while Fincher is in talks, no offer has yet been made by Fox, who won a bidding war over rights for the novel this past summer.

Reese Witherspoon, Bruna Papandrea and Leslie Dixon are set to produce the film through their Pacific Standard banner. The report states it’s unknown whether Witherspoon is interested in the lead role, although that would seem likely. Back in October, we reported that Disney had a three month hold on Fincher as they decide whether or not to move forward with the director on an adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Variety notes that their source said it’s still possible that Fincher makes 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea his next project and puts Gone Girl on hold, although we’ll just have to wait and see. Fincher is also still attached to direct the sequel The Girl Who Played with Fire, although Steve Zallian has yet to turn in a script for the film, so that project is on hold.
