Could a third X-Files film be in the works? David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both expressed interest in re-visiting the roles that made them famous 20 years ago.

Mulder and Scully could be back on the big screen if the stars who portray them have their way. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Duchovny and Anderson spoke openly about the possibility of a third X-Files film.

The stars spoke in front of press and fans on a panel commemorating the 20th anniversary of the premiere of The X-Files over the weekend.

According to Duchovny, the reality of a third movie is really just a matter of a green light from the studio.

“All the principals are on board…Gillian and I want to do it, so it’s really up to Twentieth Century Fox at this point,” Duchovny said. The star also added that X-Files creator Chris Carter was interested in a third film.

Anderson added that the key to a green light may be a campaign from fans.

“If it takes fan encouragement to get Fox interested in that, then I guess that’s what it would be,” The actress said.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe opened in 2008 and found our favorite FBI agents finally living as a couple and getting pulled back into the world of explaining the unexplainable.

Duchovny is currently starring in the Showtime original serio-comedy, Californication, which is heading into its seventh season next year.

Anderson had a multi-episode stint on NBC’s Hannibal and is working on a new drama for NBC, called Crisis. That show is being set as a mid-season replacement.

While there are no official plans for a third X-Files movie, the fact that the stars and creator of the franchise are on board is a hopeful signs for fans.
