David Bowie has released a fourth music video from his recent comeback album The Next Day.
Directed by Markus Klinko and Indrani, the “Valentine’s Day” video features many lingering close ups of Bowie’s famous eyes. Instead of tackling the theme of the song head on, we see the directors take a more subtle, yet chilling approach.
Bowie performs the song in the video, and as always, he not only plays the guitar and sings but also acts.
Bowie’s lyrics save the song from unbearable sweetness, as they tell the story of an alienated teenager, apparently about to embark on a killing spree of those that have tormented him (“the teachers and the football star”).
The contrast between the music and the dark subject matter give the track real depth, and “Valentine’s Day” has earned its place as a fan favourite on the 14 track album.
As usual, Bowie does not shy away from sensitive topics, and may well stir up further controversy with this release following his slightly tongue-in-cheek criticism of the Catholic Church in his previous video.
“Valentine’s Day” will be available to buy as a picture disc, imprinted with what appears to be a close up of a hand from the “Heroes” cover. The single is backed by “Plan,” an instrumental track that was previously released as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of The Next Day.
The picture disc is released on August 19.
This video follows previous singles “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” “Where Are We Now?” and “The Next Day.” Reports point to another Bowie album release later this year.
