Suicide Squad has been racking up plenty of controversy lately, so it’s nice to see a show of support — especially when that crosses the DC/Marvel boundaries.

We talked yesterday about Suicide Squad Director David Ayer’s reaction to the film’s negative reviews, but that’s not the only thing he’d had to say on the subject.

During the world premiere of the movie in New York, one fan from the crowd yelled, “Fuck Marvel,” during Ayer’s opening remarks, and the filmmaker promptly repeated it.

It’s an unfortunate sentiment, though not surprising given the large rivalry between DC and Marvel comics and their fan bases. However, Ayer quickly took to Twitter to apologize for his words.

Usually that’s the end of the story and everyone moves on, but what’s interesting here is that Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada addressed Marvel fans who have been giving Ayer a hard time since his comment.

Not only is it nice to see Ayer regretting his comment and offering support to his fellow filmmakers, but it’s also nice to see someone from the Marvel camp express that same kind of support for the director and his upcoming movie.

It seems fans tend to be more biased than the studios, though the very nature of their industry means both DC and Marvel are always in direct competition.

Suicide Squad opens this Friday, August 5. The studio is clearly hoping the current buzz gets people into the theatre to decide for themselves whether or not the critics were right about the movie. Several Suicide Squad spinoffs are in the works, but they’ll also depend on the film’s initial success this weekend.

Meanwhile, the next film on Marvel’s roster is Doctor Strange, which opens on November 4, 2016.
