The Newsroom alum Jeff Daniels has joined the two-part Allegiant finale as David, the film’s lead antagonist who is absolutely hated by all readers.

David leads the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which Tris visits early on in Allegiant after leaving Chicago and exploring the outside world for the first time. In conversations between the two characters, David reveals he knew Tris’ mother. (Spoiler warning!) Later, a plan is hatched to erase the memories of all those in Chicago, and when Tris tries to stop David’s plan from happening, he shoots her with a gun point blank — but only after revealing he loved Tris’ mom. To make matters worse, he ends up losing his memory thus forgetting he killed Tris.

The plot of Allegiant upset a lot of people due to the various ways Veronica Roth wrapped up the story (like Tris dying, for starters). It largely comes down to David’s action, so we think viewers will be heading into this film with a large amount of distaste for Daniels’ character.

Allegiant, Part 1 begins filming this May under the direction of Insurgent helmer Robert Schwentke. Unlike other book-to-film adaptations split into two movies (Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games), the two halves of Allegiant will be filmed separately.

The penultimate film in the Divergent series opens in March 2016. The final movie opens one year later in March 2017.

Daniels wrapped Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom last year and has since returned to movie roles. He’ll co-star in Matt Damon and Ridley Scott’s The Martian this November, and is set to play Apple CEO John Sculley in the upcoming Steve Jobs (penned by Sorkin).

Do you think Daniels is the right actor for the role?

Feel free to use the comments to express your disappointment in the Allegiant plot, too.
