The gut-wrenching horror of Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics sneaks up on you like evil in the dark of night.

Amanda Verner is no stranger to evil. During that fated winter storm, she saw the devil outside her cabin window. That winter also gave birth to her sister Hannah, a sickly child who is both deaf and blind, and who will only cling to her mother.

All seven Verners leave their home on the mountainside and venture down to the prairie in search of a bigger home. They find one, but it comes with a price: A local boy tells them the land is cursed, and if they’e not careful, it will find them.

Amanda carries the shame of a bastard child now growing inside of her, but is that all she carries? Is the land cursed, or is it Amanda herself that brings death and destruction upon her family?

‘Daughters Unto Devils’ book review

Amy Lukavics’ debut novel is like the best kind of horror film: It puts you at ease, convinces you the bumps in the night are nothing more than the house settling, and then throws a demon upon you when you least expect it.

Amanda’s initial journey is somewhat uneventful. We know she has suffered in the past, and we know she hides a secret now, but as her past horrors are unveiled, so are the ones she currently faces, culminating in a chilling, nightmare-inducing reveal.

Knocks in the middle of the night, hands grabbing wrists, and twisted demonic faces are only a few of the frightening moments awaiting you inside Daughters Unto Devils. And just because this is a young adult book, don’t expect it to have a happy ending. There is plenty of death within its pages, and it is not all swift and painless.

Daughters Unto Devils is available now. You can add it to your Goodreads list, or purchase it from Amazon or IndieBound.
