Glee star Darren Criss will make his triumphant return to Broadway in Hedwig and the Angry Inch this April.

Today we learned from Broadway World that starting April 29 at the Belasco Theatre, Darren Criss will be returning to the Broadway stage for a limited 12-week run. The actor will be taking on the role of Hedwig in the renowned rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Criss steps in for John Cameron Mitchell, off-Broadway star and the show’s original book writer.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a fictional tale about a rock and roll band, the Angry Inch, fronted by Hedwig – an East German transgender singer.

Criss posted the following video to his official Facebook page to mark the news:

Mitchell had this to say about the announcement: “I’ve got a grin plastered on my face that Darren is joining the brotherhood of Hedwigs.” He continued his praise when referring to Criss’ previous stint on Broadway, “I LOVED him in How to Succeed. His stage presence is electrifying, his rock and roll credentials and comic timing impeccable and I’m thrilled to be working with him to create a brand-new Hedwig!”

Mitchell is correct that the glam rock nature of the play is an element that Criss will certainly be happy to dive into. His lack of theatrical inhibitions will certainly prove helpful during this performance. Plus, the singer’s pop-rock vocal range should lend itself quite well to the style of this particular play.

Criss took a short but risky sabbatical from Glee back in January 2012 where he debuted as J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Although Broadway wasn’t Criss’ natural calling, he managed to not only pick up the mantle left by Daniel Radcliffe but also run with it, carving out his own specific style of Finch.

The show was well received and reviewers were impressed with the new energy and vitality Criss brought to the role. Something that he is sure to bring to Hedwig during his time with the show.
