New Gods may be a few years away, but director Ava DuVernay recently gave us a few teases as to what we can expect from the epic Fourth World story.

You don’t have to be all that familiar with Jack Kirby’s Fourth World mythology to know who Darkseid is or to understand the threat that he poses to many of DC’s biggest and best superheroes.

Yet as imposing of a threat as he is, we’ve never seen him on the big screen (though the heavily edited version of 2017’s Justice League vaguely hinted at his existence).

That looks like it’s soon to change, as Ava DuVernay confirmed for fans yesterday through a Twitter Q&A that Darkseid would indeed make an appearance in her upcoming New Gods film for DC/WB.

It’s not necessarily a surprise to fans. In fact, the bigger surprise would be a New Gods movie that didn’t include Darkseid at all. Still, it’s good confirmation from the director and co-writer herself.

DuVernay discussed a lot of things about storytelling and filmmaking in general in her Q&A, but also gave DC fans a few welcome and exciting tidbits about her adaptation of New Gods, which she’s writing alongside Mister Miracle Tom King.

She likewise revealed that the script is currently in progress, that while she doesn’t have any specific actors in mind for any of the characters, she did say that she has always brought over actors from her previous film into her current one, so it’s more than likely we’ll see an actor from her extraordinary Netflix mini-series When They See Us in New Gods.

Someone else we’re going to see in New Gods? The Furies. Ava DuVurnay confirmed their inclusion into the project, saying:

As the script is still being written, we’re likely a couple years out from seeing Darkseid, the Female Furies, Big Barda and Scott Free on our movie screens.

However, with Ava DuVernay behind the camera and penning the script, we’re sure to see something truly wonderful when it finally gets here!
