The Dark Knight Rises‘ costume designer Lindy Hemming accidently revealed a deleted scene which explains more of Bane’s back story.
In the film we don’t find out as many details as one would hope concerning Bane’s back story other than that he was injured and mutilated while in prison and was forced to wear his mask to be administered medication to prevent unbearable pain. We do find out that he’s a member of the League of Shadows, just like Bruce Wayne, and that he was a bodyguard for Talia. The rest is simply left to our imaginations.
Not anymore.
The Dark Knight Rises‘ costume designer had not yet seen the final film and recently did an interview with GQ. Hemming assumed this scene would never be cut from the film and she explained it in detail:
The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears.
He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together … If you look at the film, unless they’ve cut it—and I’m sure they haven’t—there’s a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he’s fighting and being taunted by people. He’s got chains on him, and he’s standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he’s wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask.
The GQ interviewer later told Hemming that the scene was cut from the final film and she refused to reveal anymore details. Although, she did go on to reveal that there was also a scene, “that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.”
Despite this film already being quite lengthy at 164 minutes, we’re surprised to see these scenes cut from The Dark Knight Rises. Some of the most vocal complaints have been about a lack of back story for Bane and this would have definitely tied up the loose ends that could have grounded his character’s story.
Director Christopher Nolan hasn’t always created director’s cuts in the past, but hopefully since the trilogy has ended we’ll see these deleted scenes in the director’s cut when the DVD/Blu-ray hits stores this December.
