Good news: Pacific Rim is getting a sequel! Bad news: Guillermo del Toro won’t be directing. MORE good news: Steven S. DeKnight is taking over!

All in all, this all adds up to good, right?

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim was a surprisingly great action flick with a strong story and a fantastic female character, and fans were therefore saddened by the news that the sequel had been “delayed indefinitely”.

But now, Del Toro can confirm that Pacific Rim 2 is back on track. The catch? There’s a new director.

Steven S. DeKnight, former Buffy writer and Daredevil head writer, is taking over the reins. DeKnight also created Spartacus, and worked on both Dollhouse and Smallville.

Writes Del Toro on Twitter:

This will be Steven DeKnight’s first time directing a feature film. But he’ll have Guillermo Del Toro as producer on the film, so we don’t have to worry too much about losing the story thread.

Pacific Rim starred Charlie Hunnam (who will play King Arthur in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Knights of the Roundtable), Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Diego Klattenhoff.

Are you excited to see Steven S. DeKnight take over the ‘Pacific Rim’ sequel?
