Elektra and the Punisher step onto the scene, while Matt Murdock’s work is not yet over in the first Daredevil season 2 teaser trailer.

The teaser initially debuted this past Saturday at New York Comic Con, during Marvel’s joint panel for Daredevil season 2 and the upcoming Jessica Jones. Though quite brief, the trailer does offer exciting hints of highly-anticipated characters like Elektra (Elodie Yung) and Jon Bernthal as the brutal Punisher.

Unsurprisingly, the Daredevil season 2 teaser emphasizes the Netflix series’ familiar noirish aesthetic. Matt, Foggy, and Karen all look miserable, both separately and together; from Claire’s expression, the Night Nurse’s life hasn’t gotten any brighter either. Watch below:

And of course, as Elektra pulls a mask over her face and the Punisher stalks the hallways of the local hospital, Matt remains plagued by his Catholic guilt.

“Guilt can be a good thing,” Father Lantom advises him. “The soul’s call to action. An indication that your work is not yet finished.”

At least part of Matt’s “work” will probably take the form of the Punisher, a character renowned in Marvel comics as a ruthless vigilante. It’s still unclear whether Frank Castle will ultimately act as Daredevil’s enemy — Castle usually acts as a force of justice, albeit one with incredibly brutal methods. But there is no question that Daredevil and the Punisher will provide quite a challenge for each other… and that neither particularly likes being challenged.

At Marvel’s Netflix panel, Jon Bernthal acknowledged the importance of getting the complicated character of the Punisher right.

“I feel a great responsibility and it is an honor to play the Punisher,” he said. “I give my absolute word that I am giving the character everything I have.”

Daredevil season 2 will be available for streaming on Netflix in 2016.
