The second season of Netflix’s excellent Daredevil series has added Elodie Yung as the popular ninja assassin Elektra.

In a statement about today’s casting, Marvel says that Elektra is a “mysterious woman from Matt Murdock’s past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle.”

Eagle-eyed viewers of Daredevil season 1 may remember Matt making a reference to Elektra as a relationship that didn’t work out. Despite their troubled past, it’s clear now that Elektra will be making a return to Matt Murdock’s life in a big way.

“After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb in a press release about today’s news. “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.”

Daredevil season 2 is filming now and will premiere all episodes in 2016. The first season of the show is currently available in its entirety on Netflix (and we highly recommend it).

Yung is the second big actor to join Daredevil for season 2 — the first was Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal who’s going to play The Punisher.

The actress is best known for her roles in 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation and 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The show’s titular character is the first of four heroes Netflix and Marvel are developing television series for. The remaining three are Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. All four of the characters are expected to come together in another new series after all of their solo shows are underway.

Elektra was played by Jennifer Garner in the film version of Daredevil starring Ben Affleck in 2003. The two actors just announced last week that they’re planning to divorce — what weird timing!
