The new Netflix original series Daredevil made its debut today as the first of several Marvel series the company plans on releasing. If you’re a die-hard Marvel fan you’ll love it, and if not… well, you’ll still love it — but in a different way.

I’ll be the first to say that I’m no Marvel expert. I have read a maximum of 20 comic books in my life and whenever a new character is brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe I’m sitting in the theater going “…who?” while others amongst me go “oh my God IT’S HOWARD.” But I’m a big enough fan of all things Marvel that I had to binge the first few episodes of Daredevil the second it premiered, and let me tell you: It’s an amazing addition to the collection of shows and movies currently out.

However, I will say that Daredevil is also wildly different from all the other things Marvel has released. This show is less about flashy superpowers and abilities and more about the hard life of Matthew Murdoch and his attempt to save people despite being blinded at the age of nine. Despite his disability, he has senses that make up for it — like being able to smell a man on a third floor of an apartment complex when he’s several floors above.

Daredevil is grungy, and it’s filled with more dirty fight scenes than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Agent Carter. There’s no tech here, no all-powerful S.H.I.E.L.D. or all-knowing scientists or programmers. The show is driven by pure action, and I’m totally okay with that!

The closest thing you can compare the show to would be Gotham, since both have the same sort of non-superpower all fight-based storytelling. Oh, you can probably add in a little Law and Order to the mix because when Murdoch isn’t fighting crime, he’s fighting for justice as a defense attorney with his partner Foggy Nelson. That’s what makes it so refreshing — it’s a superhero show without superpowers, but it does not need them in any way to make you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for the next episode to play.

I’ve only seen the first three episodes, but this is a show that I plan on finishing before the end of the week (because I take my time with amazing shows like this), and it’s one that I think every Marvel fan should watch.

With every show and film in the Marvel universe connecting to each other in some way, it seems like a must watch anyway!
