Daredevil is the hotly anticipated project between Marvel and Netflix. The show won’t premiere on Netflix until 2015 but the creators and cast were at NYCC to discuss the upcoming show.

Marvel’s latest project is no different from any other. It’s top secret, has lots of buzz, and can fill up a comic con hall like no other. Daredevil was easily one of the most anticipated panels making it almost impossible to get into. To keep the fan frenzy going, Netflix and Marvel released both the synopsis and some images.

“Marvel’s Daredevil” is a live action series that follows the journey of attorney Matt Murdock, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but imbued with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.

Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel TV, hosted the panel and opened by telling the story of how Charlie Cox was cast as Matt Murdock.

“One day the phone rings, and Joe Quesada says to me, ‘I found Matt Murdock.’ I didn’t know what he meant,” Loeb said. Loeb admits to not knowing what Quesada was talking about initially because they didn’t have the right to Daredevil at the time. Quesada clarified that he found the actor he wanted to play Matt Murdock. “There’s this actor. He’s gonna be on Daredevil. And I said to him, ‘We don’t have that property right now.’ He said, ‘Well we will.’ The person Joe picked out that day is the person that we cast, and that is Charlie Cox.”

D’Onofrio and cox talked about their characters which frequently are at odds while show runner DeKinght talked about the moral grey area that characters exist in.

Vincent D’onfrio says that, “Fisk is a child and monster. Everything he does in the story comes from his foundation of morality and meeting Vanessa brings him out of the shadows. You have a feeling of origin of Fisk. We are playing it and emotional, moment to moment.”

DeKnight discussed the moral grey area that the show addresses. “Matt walks a fine line between being a lawyer by day and breaking the law by night. At times it is difficult to decide who to root for because sometimes it feels like Fisk’s reason are good.”

Charlie discussed playing Matt Murdock, “It has been a real challenge to play so many aspects to Matt (blindness, physicality) I loved that Matt believes in the law by day but decides what justice is at night by taking the law into his own hands. We will see a bit about Matt’s father and what he wanted him to be.”

Clips

There were four clips shown from the upcoming show. The first featured Karen Page entering a dark apartment to retrieve a thumb drive but before she can leave she is attacked. Daredevil appears with a blindfold hiding his face and fights off her attacker.

The second clip features Rosario Dawson as Clare Temple. In this clip she is trying to help an injured Matt Murdock. She found him in her dumpster. He refuses to give her his name and she decides to help him anyway.

The third clip is of Vanessa and Wilson Fisk meeting for the first time. She is a gallery worker and he’s looking at a piece of art. Close shots of Fisk’s fingers twitching and his cuff link. Vanessa describes the painting which is various shades of white and asks him how it makes him feel. The scene is subtle but sets the stage for the relationship that will develop between the two.

The fourth clip gives us a glimpse into the law offices of Murdock and Nelson. Karen is there as well thanking the boys for helping her. Karen also offers to help at the law firm and they take her up on their offer.

The last clip is the completion of the first clip with Karen Page. We see the conclusion of the fight and as well as a flashback Matt has to his father.

The scenes shown are high quality action with a heavy layer of emotion. Daredevil is not your typical superhero show. The characters are the heart of the story. It is gritty and emotional, the action is secondary to the emotion.

During the fan Q&A Jeph Loeb is asked about how Daredevil will fit in with the rest of the Marvel universe, specifically Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Loeb played it coy saying that it was a level 7 clearance question. And then said that in Marvel everything is connected. While that is not an answer it does lead one to believe that there could be some sort of crossover between the two shows.
