Director Danny Cannon has signed on to direct and produce Fox’s Gotham pilot, a live action TV show centered around Batman’s detective James Gordon.

Danny Cannon has been tapped by Fox to direct and be the executive producer of their Batman related TV show Gotham. The show, which Fox won via a bidding war back in September focuses on detective Jim Gordon, who was most recently portrayed by Gary Oldman in director Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight franchise.

While Oldman won’t be involved in the new show, it will focus on detective James Gordon’s patrol of Gotham city and its interesting villains/criminals. With Batman joining Superman in Batman Vs Superman in 2015, we imagine Fox is looking to benefit from the reemergence of Batman and DC comic characters.

Deadline reports that they have a series commitment and are “expected to go to series as the project is a priority for the network, and the pilot has a series penalty behind it.”

Danny Cannon’s film credits leave a bit to be desired, but he’s been a director and producer on the TV show Nikita, as well as many of the CSI TV shows. He’s an interesting choice and we look forward to seeing how the pilot plays out.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, detective James Gordon first appeared in the very first Batman comic in 1939. His most famous portrayal is of course in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, where he had a fairly major role.

Gotham will be the second DC comics based TV show, with Flash coming to CW. There hasn’t been a TV show based around any Batman characters in years, so it’s bound to be an original take on the Gordon character.

There still aren’t many details known about the show, but now that a director has been chosen, we imagine we’ll start to hear casting rumors soon enough.
