The Oscar nominated film Dallas Buyers Club’s DVD/Blu-ray hits store shelves today, starring Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner.

Dallas Buyers Club is a front runner at the Oscars this year, pulling in six nominations, and it’s worthy of every nod it received.

When Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) learns he is HIV-positive, the homophobic Texan finds himself sharing an unexpected bond with gay men also battling the illness. He quickly realizes that their only chance of survival lies in going around regulations and powerful pharmaceutical companies.

As McConaughey organizes an illicit trade in a drug program that shows dramatic improvements in himself and his patients, the FDA and Big Pharma see him as a threat.

Jared Leto plays a transexual named Rayon and he and McConaughey are brilliant together. Their relationship starts off rocky, with Ron pushing Rayon away due to his initial hatred of homosexuals and the realization that they’re both in the same hellish boat.

But as Ron realizes he needs a partner in crime, Rayon is there for him in every way he could hope for. We then find out that Leto is truly the one who shines in this film.

While McConaughey has been getting the majority of the press due to his incredible physical transformation, Leto’s portrayal of Rayon is nothing short of magnificent. Leto disappears behind the frail frame of a proud transgender person that’s struggling to survive HIV.

Both he and McConaughey are up for Oscars this year and it wouldn’t be surprising if they sweeped the Best Actor and Supporting Actor categories. Watching Dallas Buyers Club is like watching two of the most talented actors battle it out on screen as they become best friends.

The film is often difficult to watch, as we sometimes get the feeling that Ron is only concerned with making money off of people in dire need of healthcare that was unavailable in the 1980’s, but by the end we see that he’s a completely changed man.

Jennifer Garner plays a sympathetic doctor in the film and her great performance has only been underlooked due to the fact that McConaughey and Leto were so stellar. The cast is impeccable and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the film gather quite a few Oscars in March.

Dallas Buyers Club Blu-ray features five minutes of deleted scenes and a four minute feature with McConaughey.

Deleted Scenes: Just under five minutes of deleted material is included, most of which is taken up by a scene between Jennifer Garner, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.

A Look Inside Dallas Buyers Club: Matthew McConaughey provides a bit of information concerning the story in between clips from the film.

If you’ve yet to see Dallas Buyers Club, we definitely suggest picking up its DVD/Blu-ray today. The film will undoubtedly have a major presence at the Oscars this year and it includes two unforgettable performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.
