Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley has an empowering message about social media, and reminds us that nobody‘s life is as great as their Instagram page suggests.

Daisy Ridley is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VIII, but clearly the young actress has time for a few Instagram posts — and great messages to go with them!

Posting a heavily edited picture of herself and ironically tagging it “I woke up like this #nofilter #nomakeup,” she’s reminding us that social media is basically a big fat lie, and that we shouldn’t think ourselves inadequate just because we don’t look like celebrities or our friends.

“3 of these statements aren’t true,” she writes of her selfie.

“Social media is great but also a bit scary cause what people post is the most filtered, most carefully chosen and cleverly edited moments of their lives,” Ridley reminds us. “And self esteem is a huge issue for people around the world.”

Rather than posting an actual #nofilter selfie, Ridley does something arguably even more relatable, and explains exactly why she (like many of us) feels the need to self-edit.

“My skin isn’t great so I don’t post no make up selfies, much as I’d like to; I have a trainer urging me on in workouts and don’t include all the times I say ‘I can’t do it’ and I don’t smile all the time but I like to share the pictures where I am,” she confesses.

The big takeaway, however? “I actually do love myself, I try to think good thoughts always and am surrounded by the most wonderful people, so I’m keeping it balanced (like the Force, obvs). Just thought I’d say :)”

We really appreciate this little boost of collective confidence from Daisy Ridley, whose Rey already made us feel more empowered in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Keep doing what you’re doing, Daisy!
