John Oliver will be reprising his role as Professor Ian Duncan in season 5 of Community.

After eight weeks of capably filling Jon Stewart’s very large (clown-sized, even?) shoes as host of The Daily Show, it looks like John Oliver will have some free time to return to Greendale.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oliver will be appearing in at least six episodes of Community‘s upcoming fifth season as psychology/anthropology professor Ian Duncan.

It will be a welcome return for one of Community’s most useful characters. Oliver as Ian Duncan first appeared in the pilot episode where he refused to help Jeff cheat his way into a legitimate college degree (or as “legitimate” as Greendale degrees get).

Duncan would turn up periodically in seasons 1 through 3 as a sort of Swiss army knife of a Community character, filling whatever role the show needed that week, whether it was “psychology professor,” “anthropology professor,” but most frequently “train-wreck of a human-being.”

Oliver sat out Community‘s season 4, presumably because he was occupied with 2012 U.S. Presidential election coverage as a correspondent on The Daily Show. But the lack of Dan Harmon may have also been a factor.

Now that Harmon is back and bringing writers like Chris McKenna and actors like Oliver back into the fold, season 5 may have a “getting the old band back together” feel…except for, you know, Chevy Chase.
