Supernatural season 9 is looking promising, according to The CW president Mark Pedowitz.

According to Zap2It, at the TCA Press Tour on Sunday, Pedowitz said that while no determination has been made on an early pickup, the network is very happy with the show: “We are pleased with how Wednesday night has worked out, with Arrow being a bonafide hit and Supernatural actually gaining viewers.”

Supernatural spent its previous two seasons on Friday nights, but after receiving strong ratings, the network chose to move the show back to mid-week. And, after winning two People’s Choice Awards, it seems the show has not made the network regret its decision.

“Creatively the show is in a good place,” Pedowitz added.

As for season 9, “There’s always a good shot that could happen.” Stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have signed on for potential seasons 9 and 10, which is another promising sign. A final decision on a new season will be made “based on the show’s ratings when it returns from winter hiatus on January 16.”

When asked about the potential for a Supernatural spin-off starring Castiel based on the new Vampire Diaries spin-off, Pedowitz was less enthusiastic.

“You look at [whether the] audience is engaged,” he said. “You look at that universe — can it actually launch something? Supernatural if you decide to do a spin-off off of that, you [question] does it work? Does it incubate the show really well?”

Unlike Supernatural, which has a very small cast, there are “a lot of characters on Vampire Diaries.” According to Pedowitz, “Klaus and the Original family gives us an opportunity to do something where we can get more bang for the buck, so to speak.”
