Will Warner Brothers one day create a movie based on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? You know they want to — and now it sounds like there’s a very loose plan in the works.

In a piece looking at J.K. Rowling’s recent string of hits (The Cursed Child play, The Cursed Child script book, Potter TV rights going to NBCUniversal, and a hefty payday for writing the Fantastic Beasts script), THR drops a little tidbit about a Cursed Child movie:

Though Warner Bros. controls the characters and would have dibs on a film, there is nothing in the works, and the plan is for Fantastic Beasts to run its course before discussions begin. Rowling, 51, is focused on writing the sequel’s script and is working closely with producers David Heyman and Steve Kloves.

Fantastic Beasts will likely “run its course” by the end of 2020, when the third (and final?) movie is set to be released. With Warner Brothers planning to release a new Fantastic Beasts movie every two years, perhaps a Cursed Child movie could arrive in November 2022.

But isn’t that too far away? I’ve previously said that Rowling and company should consider broadcasting the play directly from London’s West End into movie theaters around the world — and they should do it as soon as possible. It’s a win/win: Rowling keeps her promise that this story had to be a play because it was designed to be a play, and fans around the world get easy access to the Palace Theater and the original cast.

A worldwide broadcast of the play could also win over critics of the script book, who’ve sunk Cursed Child to a three and a half star average on Amazon, making it the lowest rated book of the Harry Potter series.

We all know WB is chomping at the bit to create as many Wizarding World movies as possible, and to the studio, The Cursed Child is tender meat to sink their teeth into. The question is, will Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany allow it?
