CBS has announced that Criminal Minds’ Thomas Gibson has been fired following a physical fight on the set of the show.

Gibson’s alleged attack on co-executive producer and writer Virgil Williams originally caused a two-week suspension, but as of Friday Criminal Minds decided to fire the actor.

The incident occurred while Gibson was directing an episode of the long-running drama series, according to TMZ.

“Thomas Gibson has been dismissed from Criminal Minds,” said the network in a statement. “Creative details for how the character’s exit will be addressed in the show will be announced at a later date.”

The actor said in a statement released to media: “I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last twelve years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew, and, most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have.”

Gibson, who plays Special Agent Aaron Hotchner, has been on the show since its inception in 2005. This isn’t the first time the actor has gotten into trouble on set — he reportedly hit assistant director Ian Woolf a few years ago, causing him to end up in an anger management class.

Criminal Minds season 12 premieres September 28 on ABC.
