With the massive box office success, it’s not surprising to hear that a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians is already in the works.

Crazy Rich Asians may have only premiered in theaters on August 15, but after an opening weekend raking in $35 million, studios aren’t wasting time to continue cashing in on the love for this film. Fans of the book by Kevin Kwan know that the book is actually the first in a trilogy, so there was a great deal of hope that more films would be made if Crazy Rich Asians was successful.

Thankfully, that’s most definitely been the case, and Variety reports that a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians is officially being worked on. John Chu and his entire creative team will be returning for the sequel, though there have been no reports on original cast members reprising their roles.

For those unfamiliar with the series, the second book is called China Rich Girlfriend. It involved Constance Wu’s character, Rachel, traveling to China with Nick (Henry Golding) to find her father. And while Rachel and Nick’s exploits are the center of the story, there are plenty of juicy romance storylines happening with characters like Astrid and Kitty Pong.

Nina Jacobson reportedly said that they wanted to let audiences ask for a sequel rather than jumping the gun and producing one, and audiences have most certainly asked for more. Plus, with the road paved ahead thanks to Kwan’s next two books in the franchise, the movie franchise will easily be able to continue Kwan’s vision on the big screen.

Crazy Rich Asians was the first major studio film in 25 years to feature a primarily Asian-American cast. It’s an incredibly overdue step in showing more diversity in Hollywood, and the intense love that audiences have shown for the film is hopefully prompting Hollywood to welcome more and more diverse stories into major motion pictures.

Development for the Crazy Rich Asians sequel is still in the earliest of stages, so there is no release date just yet. However, we can hope that we don’t have to wait too long to see the next installment in this monumental film franchise!
