Cory Monteith’s death in mid-July was one of very few in which an actor passes while still involved with their show. The Primetime Emmys are planning on recognizing the enormity of that fact.

Speaking to The Wrap recently, Primetime Emmy producer Ken Ehrlich confirmed that they plan on holding a special tribute honoring Monteith.

“It’s too fresh. Definitely, there will be something. And the real question at this point is what we will do. Frankly, I think we need to wait a little bit before we can think about what we want to do.”

He added that there will be a change to the annual “In Memoriam” segment which always looks back at who passed in the last year.

“I’m not ready to announce what we’re going to do, but it’s really kind of interesting,” he said. “What I can tell you is that there will still be a significant ‘In Memoriam’ segment, but that there are a couple other things that we’re talking about doing.”

The “In Memoriam” changes were planned before Monteith’s death.

One touching tribute to Cory Monteith would be if some of the Glee cast appeared on stage and performed a song as video and photos of the actor rolled on screen. It would be significant for numerous reasons, but perhaps most special because the Emmys will be broadcast September 22 – just four days before the Glee season 5 premiere on Fox.

In other words, an appearance by the Glee cast members on the Emmys would likely be their first public tribute to Monteith’s death.

Ryan Murphy confirmed earlier this month that the first two episodes of Glee season 5 will be centered around The Beatles, and then episode 3 will be the Cory/Finn tribute episode.

Neil Patrick Harris will host the Primetime Emmy Awards.
