An initial report out of the British Columbia coroner’s office indicates that Cory Monteith died due to the overuse of heroin and alcohol.

Both were in his system when workers at a Vancouver hotel found his body unconscious on Saturday. Hotel employees initially entered his room because he had missed his check out time. He was 31 years old.

The Province of British Columbia’s official YouTube channel released the following video statement to discuss the findings:

“At this point there is no other evidence to suggest this is more than the most sad and tragic accident,” the coroner said.

Monteith is best known for his role on Glee, which was scheduled to begin shooting season 5 next week. While the production hasn’t been officially halted, it’s likely they’ll delay the start by at least a few weeks.

It was publicly known that Monteith had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse in the past. He entered a rehab facility in March of this year which led him to miss a couple of Glee season 4’s final episodes. The finale saw Finn Hudson pursuing a teaching career.

Yesterday, we released an article looking at various ways Glee can move forward from this tragic loss. No choice will be easy, but the options we suggest will ultimately be the best for the show moving forward.

Many of the show’s stars have spoken out about their friend’s passing, including Matthew Morrison who dedicated a performance on Sunday night. Darren Criss was seen on Monday night with a black ribbon on his suit while he made an appearance for his new film Girl Most Likely co-starring Kristen Wiig. The actor/singer canceled previously scheduled talk show appearances Tuesday morning because it is too early for him to speak about Monteith’s untimely death.
