In 13 short episodes, Constantine managed to give us a slew of interesting villains to haunt our nightmares. We rank them from worst to best.

Who’s the worst villain to show up on NBC’s Constantine? Who’s the best? Which one makes us shake in our boots, and which one could we see existing in our world? Peruse our list to find out the answers to these questions and more.

17. Anton

Someone had to be in the last spot on our list, and that (un)lucky person happens to be Anton, the soul broker from episode 3, “The Devil’s Vinyl.” The real “villain” in this episode was the vinyl record that could blow you up into tiny, bloody bits or freeze you from the inside out. Anton was just the middle man, collecting souls for the First of the Fallen. After John literally made him eat his contract, we lost all respect for this guy. He may be a messenger from hell, but in comparison to the other creatures on our list, he’s really not that scary.

16. Karabasan

This creature resembles a demonic dog, and the reason why it’s gained the second-to-last spot on our list is because it was merely a pawn in the game Felix Faust was playing. Sure, it had been stealing energy and power from Faust, and it was the reason why Faust needed John, but in the end, “Quid Pro Quo” was not about the karabasan, or even about Faust — it was about Chas and his abilities. A simple cattle prod disposed of this demon.

15. Coblynau

The Coblynau are number 15 on our list because technically they’re not bad guys. In the show, they were being used to haunt a mine, but in reality these spirits usually knocked on the walls of caverns in order to warn miners of any dangers they may be facing. Unfortunately, a Romani gypsy hellbent on gaining some extra power summoned them to do her bidding.

14. Furcifer

Furcifer was the first-ever demon John came up against in the show. He was a doozy of a guy, but his rather quick annihilation sets him low on our list. Despite this, he did have a few chilling moments, especially when he turned into John himself, albeit with poorer hygiene and dark circles under his eyes. Dangling Astra in front of John was a low blow, but we wouldn’t expect anything else from one of these guys.

13. Ivunche

The only reason the ivunche is so near the end of the list is that we barely got to see them during Constantine’s short first season. However, the ivunche has all the makings of a terrible foe for John, as evidenced by the fact that he needed to invoke the demon king Pazuzu in order to scare one of them off. The invunche is a twisted, faceless demon who still haunts our very nightmares.

12. Lamashtu

Lamashtu’s spot on our list is further back than if she had been acting of her own accord. However, Lamashtu was under the influence of the Brujería, and therefore her tactics of intimidation were somewhat lessened. That being said, Lamashtu ate newborn babies, and if that doesn’t make your stomach turn, we don’t know what will. She’s a goddess of hell, and her ex-lover was the demon king Pazuzu, whose amulet John used to easily dispatch of her.

11. Mnemoth

Mnemoth is the hunger demon from the first issue of Hellblazer and the fourth episode of Constantine. He’s an iconic character, and definitely deserves his spot right around the middle of this list. He’s a one-off demon on the show, but he made quite an impression. His possession of various random characters caused him to leave a path of death in his wake, but it isn’t until we see him take hold of Gary Lester that his true destructive capabilities come into play. John is faced with a horrifically difficult decision, and he by no means takes the easy path. He uses his long-time friend’s body to trap Mnemoth, knowing he’s sentencing Gary to a brutal death as the hunger demon rages inside of the man with no ability to escape.

10. Felix Faust

As one of the more infamous villains from the Hellblazer comics, some die-hard fans might not be too happy Faust barely made it into the top 10. However, the Faust from the show was just a shade in comparison to the character from the comics. In the show, Faust was a cranky old man who was hardly featured, but rather was an excuse for delivering the story behind Chas’ miraculous gift. The episode was a good one, but Faust was clearly underused.

9. Marcello’s spirit

“Rage of Caliban” was definitely one of the creepier episodes of the show, if only because children are terrifying even when they’re not being possessed. In the end, it was a child that was the cause of all this disaster, or at least the spirit of a child that had left its adult body. Marcello was in a comatose state, but he was still getting around. After murdering his own parents, Marcello’s spirit fled his body and continued to cause havoc. With his spirit back in his body, Marcello is at least a bit less murderous — for now.

8. Zed’s father

Zed’s father is another character we have yet to see on the show, but since the mere mention of his existence sends shivers down our spines, we’re certain he deserves to break the top 10 on our list of Constantine‘s villains. Zed’s father is the leader of a cult who wants to use her powers against her will, and it’s obvious he’ll do anything to get her back after she ran away. He has no problem with kidnapping and drugging his own daughter, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this guy.

7. Pazuzu

We didn’t get to see much of Pazuzu on Constantine, and we only ever saw him while he was possessing John. Despite this, Pazuzu is a demon king with a whole lot of power. He was enough to chase off the ivunche, and that creature doesn’t look like it’s scared of much. It wasn’t easy to exorcise Pazuzu from Constantine, and he hadn’t even completely taken over his body yet.

The Brujería

You might be wondering why the Brujería aren’t higher on our list, but the answer is pretty simple — we know nothing about them. Over the course of 13 episodes, we never saw them directly; we’ve just seen Constantine dealing with the consequences of their presence. Plus, in the end, we learned that they weren’t even the Big Bad — Manny was! The Brujería certainly deserve to be respected, but since we don’t know exactly what they’re capable of just yet, we’re keeping them at number six on our list.

5. The Man

This character deserves our fifth spot for the sole reason that he isn’t a demon or a supernatural creature or a master of the dark arts — he’s just human, and that makes his presence that much more frightening and plausible. The Man is just a regular guy with a very, very twisted sense of love. He kills his brides and leaves their rotting corpses in bed together, and then uses their spirits to draw in the next lonely girl who crosses his path. We might not think someone like Felix Faust could exist in our world, but people like The Man certainly do.

4. Jacob Shaw

Shaw gets a top spot on our list for several reasons. Firstly, he had been operating for such a long time that he seemed to have his whole game planned out down to the tiniest detail. Secondly, his alternate universe was just plain terrifying. As long as there was a mirrored surface around, he could drag you into his world. There, you had to play by his rules, and it wasn’t until Ritchie came along that anyone could even think about breaking them.

3. Imogen

Imogen had us fooled right from the get-go, but can you blame us? The beautiful angel seemed so pure and innocent in the beginning, but once her feather was reunited with her wing, we finally saw her true colors — literally. Having gone from bright white to pure black in a matter of seconds, Imogen’s power took a dark turn and she wasted no time in flaunting it. With Zed in her grasp and John’s hands tied, it was up to Manny to stop his fellow celestial being. If he hadn’t been there, who knows what kind of destruction she could’ve caused.

2. Papa Midnite

Papa is perhaps the most dynamic character on Constantine. He’s not wholly good, but he’s not wholly evil; rather, he looks out for himself and plays the game whichever way he can. When he is being a villain, however, he is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Papa is powerful and intelligent, and that does not bode well for John. Midnite has no problem getting down and dirty either, and a leader who is wiling to get blood on his hands is someone everyone needs to pay attention to. If we end up getting a season 2, John will have to be on the lookout for a voodoo priest hellbent on revenge.

1. Manny

Yes, we’re saving our number one spot for a character who may or may not actually be a villain. Regardless of Manny’s true intentions, he is certainly working outside his normal constraints. Hiring the Brujería? Putting a bounty on John’s head? Being frustratingly vague and smug? If that’s not villainous, we don’t know what is. In all seriousness, Manny earns our top spot because he’s been controlling the Rising Darkness this entire time, and we just had no idea. On top of that, he’s supposed to be a good guy — he’s an angel for God’s sake! — and yet he definitely has his own agenda, which does not bode well for John Constantine.
