Constantine has replaced its lead female character, and now we know who will be playing her!

Last week, we learned that Lucy Griffiths’ character Liv would be written out of Constantine. Fans were surprised that the lead female character would exit the show so soon, but showrunners cited the fact that they decided to go in a different direction.

Liv will be replaced by Zed, a character from the Hellblazer comics, and now we know who will be playing her: Angélica Celaya (right).

Celaya will replace Griffiths as the leading lady following the airing of the pilot, Variety reports. Her character, at least in the comics, is an artist who becomes Constantine’s lover and partner in crime.

At the Television Critics Association, showrunner Daniel Cerone said, “Liv is a great character, she’s wide-eyed, she’s reactive, [but] we felt a bit hamstrung by her, frankly.”

Though fans were disheartened by the early departure of Griffiths, longtime followers of the comics should be happy that the original character of Liv will be replaced by someone who has been featured in the source material.

Though the show will stick as close to the comics as possible, it will be airing on NBC and will have to conform to the network’s standards. According to showrunner David S. Goyer, there could be some slight departures from the source. So far the only two things being cited are Constantine’s smoking habit, which they’re “not shying away from,” but they’re also “not glorifying,” and Constantine’s bisexuality, which has “no immediate plans” to be explored.

One more thing DC Comics fans can look forward to is the introduction of other DC characters that might become significant later on, much how Arrow introduced other DC characters within its story line, even granting The Flash its own spinoff show.

Constantine will air on NBC beginning on Friday, October 24 at 10 p.m.
