NBC’s Constantine has added a new character to their roster, Detective Jim Corrigan, better known in the DC universe as The Spectre.

Emmett Scanlan is crossing over from the Marvel universe, after appearing briefly in their most recent hit Guardians of the Galaxy, to take on the role of the New Orleans homicide detective. The Irish-born actor is best known for his U.K. television appearances: from BBC’s Atlantis, to the BAFTA award winning In the Flesh.

During a press tour, Daniel Cerone (Executive Producer) teased that The Spectre may be coming to the show — though nothing had been confirmed at that point. The introduction of the character would certainly open up the occult aspect of Constantine even further, with The Spectre appearing as a cosmic entity who is the embodiment of vengeance and justice, often exacting it in gruesome and somewhat karmic ways.

Though he was speaking hypothetically at the time, Cerone mentioned the potential that Corrigan had as a character on their show. “Jim Corrigan is a police officer who kind of takes the law into his own hands… he ends up dying and is reincarnated as The Spectre,” Cerone said. “So it’s a perfect opportunity for us, because we can name this character Jim Corrigan and within our story, for the general viewer, that works, because now Constantine has a friend on the force. For the comic book fan, ‘My god, that’s Jim Corrigan!’”

Meanwhile, IGN, who broke the news over the weekend, had the following to say of what we should expect from Corrigan’s character:

“On Constantine, Corrigan will be a homicide detective in New Orleans who is plunged into Constantine’s world of occult horrors. Furthermore, Corrigan is someone who is obsessed with justice, and who doesn’t let police procedure or red tape stop him from putting away the bad guys, even if the bad guys turn out to be inhuman.”

Though it’s not been confirmed yet whether Corrigan will become The Spectre during the course of Constantine’s first season, or beyond depending on the show’s success, there have certainly been hints that this may turn into something of a larger role in the long term for Scanlan — perhaps following in the footsteps of the upcoming Arrow spin-off, The Flash.

Cerone was positive about the possibility, adding during that same press tour that they “can get back to that character and can slowly develop that character and who knows, maybe there’s an opportunity in the future to even see the origin story unfold within the framework of our TV series. It creates opportunities and creatively you just have to go in and lay that groundwork in and try and let it unfold naturally.”

Constantine will air on NBC beginning Friday, October 24 at 10 p.m.
