Reporting Community news nowadays is starting to feel more and more like leading the show down a long hallway to a peacock-shaped electric chair. One of the show’s most well-known writers and holdovers from the Dan Harmon seasons, Megan Ganz, has announced that she will be leaving the show once production on season four is wrapped to join the writing staff of Modern Family.

Yesterday we said that the next step in monitoring Community’s renewal chances is to see if cast and crew were beginning to join other series. Well, that didn’t take long.

Ganz made the announcement via her Reddit account to the Community subreddit. The whole post is very well-written and worth a look but here are some highlights.

For the last three years, the sum total of my contribution to this planet (in terms of effort, passion, and things I let myself go soft and pimply for) could be described as follows: Community. Recently, I was offered a job writing for Modern Family, and although it’s unclear what will happen with Community for the fifth season (or the sixth season, or the movie), I’ve decided to take this new position. Tomorrow is my first day and I’m excited and scared to start this new… well everything. I’m sure the coffee will probably be the same.

It’s a classy move for Ganz to find a way to break news to the fans first and should Community get a season five (even less likely today than it was yesterday), she will be missed. Ganz has written several fan favorites including “Basic Lupine Urology” (the Law and Order episode) and “Cooperative Caligraphy” (the first bottle episode). She is credited with writing two episodes for the upcoming season: “Paranormal Parentage” and “Advanced Introduction to Finality.” At least this means a Law and Order/Modern Family episode is slightly more possible.
