Community season 5, episode 5, “Geothermal Expansion,” airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. It’s time to say goodbye to Troy Barnes.

Just last week we learned why Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) was leaving Greendale. And this week we say goodbye.

The dearly departed Pierce Hawthorne saw greatness in Troy Barnes and decided to leave him the Hawthorne fortune, provided Troy successfully sail around the world first. Shockingly, Troy agreed to those conditions and will leave Greendale for the foreseeable future, but not before his friends throw him a going away party.

Abed will throw a party for his leaving friend/other half but in fitting Abed fashion, there’s a twist. The party is a campus-wide game of “the floor is lava.” Such an appropriate event for the child-like Troy and Abed.

As we can clearly see from the provided photos, things take a turn for the Mad Max, yet again turning Greendale into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Is there a location on Earth that takes its games more seriously than Greendale?

Community has deftly survived the loss of Pierce, but Troy is inarguably more important to the ensemble and it remains to be seen what the show can do without one of its stars. By all indications, however, tonight looks to be a proper send-off at least.
