Donald Glover, who portrays ex-high school football star turned all-around goof Troy Barnes will only be appearing in five of Community season 5’s 13 episodes.

It had been previously rumored that Donald Glover was interested in a reduced role in season 5 so that he could better pursue his rap career as Childish Gambino, but now he and Sony Pictures Television have made it official, according to Vulture.

Glover was under contract for all 13 episodes but expressed a desire to not appear in all of them and came to a deal in which he would only be contracted to appear in five. There is no word yet on which five episodes he will appear in.

After a long and tortuous history as a TV show that included constantly being on the verge of cancellation, the showrunner feuding with an aging comedy legend, and both the showrunner and said aging comedy legend being kicked off and leaving the show, respectively, Community finally seemed to have turned things around karmically.

Showrunner and arguable cult icon Dan Harmon was hired to return to the show along with one of his head writers, Chris McKenna, after their absence in an ill-received fourth season. But the latest Donald Glover news suggests that this show might just be cursed. Either that, or it’s an elaborate sociological experiment by NBC to see how much dedicated fans can handle before jumping ship.
