Dreams do come true, Human Beings. Yahoo Screen has rescued Community for a 13-episode season 6.

Six seasons and a…holy crap, Community is actually getting six seasons! Canceled by NBC after its fifth season, Community will officially return to a sixth 13-episode tome in the fall, this time on Yahoo’s streaming service, Yahoo Stream.

Dan Harmon, who will return as showrunner along with long-time writer Chris McKenna, said in a statement, “I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”

What a delightfully unsubtle dig at his former network!

Joel McHale also offered his thoughts: “‘The reports of our cancelation have been greatly exaggerated.’ —Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you, Sony. Thank you, Yahoo. Thank you, Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”

Vulture reports that Community‘s studio, Sony Pictures did negotiate seriously with Hulu, but Yahoo was eager to acquire a show with a built-in audience to jump start its original streaming service – much like Netflix did with Arrested Development.

Also worth noting: Donald Glover and Chevy Chase will not be back, according to The AV Club.

This was very much a last-second save, as all the Community principles’ contracts were set to expire today before Yahoo swooped in. Had a deal not been reached on a sixth season, it would have been very difficult to round up the cast and crew for a sixth season in the future.

But all sides were able to get the deal done and Community’s 12th hour resurrection is another example of Internet partisans keeping alive what Nielsen ratings couldn’t.

Five MeowMeowBeanz to Community fans.
