NBC announced Friday afternoon that Community has been canceled after five seasons on the network.

The news had been expected by some after luke-warm ratings for season 5 despite Dan Harmon’s return to the program.

Update: Sony is already very interested in finding a new home for the show, as we speculated below. It’s not over yet, everyone!

Community co-stars Joel McHale and Yvette Nicole Brown were the first stars to react to the news:

The good news is that while the show is dead at NBC, it could be resurrected elsewhere. Community has had a “six seasons and a movie” mantra for some time, and a site like Netflix could be very interested in picking it up for one final season and then, of course, the movie. We could imagine Amazon Instant Video or Hulu competing for it as well. The latter already owns re-runs exclusively.

If Netflix were to pick it up, this wouldn’t be the first time they resurrected a show from the dead. They gave AMC’s The Killing one new season which is slated to bow this August.
