Nothing is sacred these days, so it should come as no surprise that Coming to America is getting a sequel. But wait! There may be a silver lining.

Coming to America is one of those movies that’s wholly outdated and yet still so relevant. It released in 1988 and starred Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, and even Eriq La Salle and a young Samuel L. Jackson.

One part comedy genius, one part love story, the film has gained more admiration in the years following its release than it did when it first hit theaters.

If you, like me, love the strange ridiculousness that is Coming to America, then you, like me, may be hesitant to feel anything but apprehension for a possible sequel.

However, there is a silver lining to the idea. According to EW, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, the screenwriters of the original movie, are the ones working on the sequel, which will be released by Paramount Pictures.

Rumors had been circulating for some time that a sequel may be a possibility, thanks to a now-deleted Tweet from Eddie Murphy, but any details are currently unknown. Will Murphy reprise his role? Will any of the original cast members come back? Will the sequel be an homage to the ’80s or will it be updated for current times? The topic is, certainly, still quite relevant.
