Eddie Murphy is returning to reprise one of his most iconic roles!

According to EW, Paramount is officially moving forward with a sequel to the hit 1988 comedy, Coming To America.

The sequel will feature famed comedic actor Eddie Murphy reprising his role as Prince Akeem.

Rumors of a sequel to the hit film have actually been around since 2013, but the project has been met with a few roadblocks along the way.

Coming To America 2 seemed to be making some headway production-wise back in 2017 when it was announced that Snatched helmer Jonathan Levine had been tapped to direct the sequel.

Though Levine has since left the project, the good news is the sequel has found a new director in Craig Brewer.

Brewer, who is best known for his work on Fox’s hit music drama Empire, has also worked on Dolemite Is My Name, Footloose, and Hustle & Flow.

In a statement announcing his involvement with the project, Murphy spoke of his excitement to get to work on the next chapter of Prince Akeem’s story.

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” said Murphy. “We’ve assembled a great team that will be lead by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite [Is My Name], and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

In addition to securing Brewer, the sequel has also tapped black-ish creator Kenya Barris to work on the script. She’ll be rewriting the screenplay from a script originally penned by original Coming To America scribes Barry Blaustein and David Scheffield.

The upcoming sequel will find Murphy’s Prince Akeem returning to America after learning of a long-lost son who could make for an unlikely heir to the Zamunda throne.

There’s currently no word on when we can expect Coming To America 2 to hit the big screen.
