Colin Trevorrow is out as the director of Star Wars: Episode IX, Disney announced on Tuesday.

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX,” Disney said in their official announcement on Tuesday. “Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

For fans, Trevorrow’s departure from the director’s chair may not come as a huge surprise. Trevorrow’s film The Book of Henry, released earlier this year, was a massive critical and commercial flop. The film was panned by critics, with many calling it one of the worst movies of the year.

When The Book of Henry was released, Hypable took a deeper look at how the problems in that film spelled trouble for Trevorrow’s future Star Wars film. Less than three months later, Disney seems to have heard these concerns.

Trevorrow’s departure from the film continues an unfortunate and damaging trend for Disney’s Star Wars films. Back in June, Disney announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller would no longer be directing the Han Solo spinoff film. Like the Trevorrow announcement, Disney also cited “different creative visions” as the reason for the split.

Given what we know, it seems that Disney executives have a vision for how they believe these films should be made and that conflicts with the ideas of the hired directors. Is Disney simply looking for directors that will succumb to their wishes and be puppets for their vision? These recent splits seem to indicate as much.

With Trevorrow out of the director’s chair for Star Wars: Episode IX, it’s unclear who will take his place. What is clear, however, is that Disney has a serious problem that is not going away.

With Star Wars: Episode VIII only a few months away, Disney is not inspiring much confidence. It’s increasingly doubtful whether this beloved series is in the right hands.
