Yesterday, Merlin fans rejoiced over the news that Colin Morgan has landed a guest starring role in Quirke, BBC One’s new crime thriller set to premiere later this year. See more details about his role!

Unfortunately, BBC’s official press release announcing the new mystery drama gives little detail about the character Morgan is slated to play. But fear not, Merlin fans! We’ve taken it upon ourselves to do a bit of digging around the internet to bring you more details on Morgan’s first post-Merlin role!

As we previously reported, Quirke is based off the critically acclaimed series by John Banville, writing under the pseudonym Benjamin Black. The series will follow the life of Quirke, the chief pathologist of the Dublin city morgue-turned-accidental-detective, as he investigates the deaths of the people who end up on his mortician’s slab.

Colin Morgan is set to appear in the series as Jimmy Minor in the episode centered around the third book in Banville’s series, Elegy For April.

In the novel, Jimmy falls on Quirke’s radar after Quirke gets involved with investigating the mysterious disappearance of his daughter Phoebe’s friend April.

Additionally, an excerpt from the novel on Amazon reveals that Jimmy is in fact a crime reporter for the Evening Mail. In the book, Phoebe paints Jimmy as a flighty character who is perpetually late and likes others to think he is always busier than everyone else.

Though Jimmy is a crime reporter for the paper, Phoebe is under the impression that there are “not enough crimes committed in this sleepy city to keep him as busy as he claims to be.”

The original casting call for the third episode in the series reveals that Jimmy is a young reporter in his 20s who works with the Evening Press. He is described as being “very much a part of the city” and regarded by Quirke as “a man of the world.”

The casting call also reveals that Jimmy knows a lot about April’s life, something he eventually reveals to Quirke.

It seems from everything we’ve dug up that Morgan’s character may play a rather significant role in helping Quirke uncover the mystery of April’s disappearance!
