In a new behind-the-scenes video, Merlin actor Colin Morgan talks about the situation in which Merlin finds himself in the final episode of the series.

In particular, Morgan discusses the need for Merlin’s magic to remain a secret for the entire series. “It’s been his biggest obstacle, it’s been his biggest hurt, it’s probably been his biggest aid as well,” he says, adding that Merlin’s ability to hide his magic behind “the guise of a fool” helped him have the personal credit of being a hero.

He further explains that Merlin’s situation reflects the situation of many unsung heroes today such as doctors, saying that “[Merlin] doesn’t need to go ‘I’ve got magic!’ to make it worth anything.” Here, however, the interviewer interjects and thinks that Merlin does need to make his magic known for his acts to be meaningful. Morgan disagrees and says, “I think part of him would like to say it because magic is intrinsically who he is … but it has also given him the ability to be where he is … He wouldn’t be where he is without having kept that secret.” Even though this is the situation Merlin has found himself in for the past five seasons, Morgan adds, “Is now the time to go risk everything? Or maybe he’s in a situation where everything has got so low, that saying you’ve got magic isn’t really so bad.”

Morgan also addresses Morgana, saying that Morgana’s journey has taken her in the opposite direction from Gwen’s, describing this journey jokingly as “from princess to demonic sorceress.” He goes on to discuss the pain that Morgana has been through this season and in the three years between seasons 4 and 5. The big question, he says, is “Does she deserve what she’s got coming to her?” Magic is all about choosing to use it for good or evil, and Morgana chose the wrong path in Merlin’s eyes.

How will the series end? American fans will finally find out when the season 5 finale of Merlin airs on Syfy on May 31 or when the DVD box set is released on April 9.
