Cold Calls by Charles Benoit is a fast-paced story about keeping secrets — at all costs.

What would you do if you got a mysterious phone call from a blocked number in the middle of the night? What would you make of the static on the other end, and then the computerized voice that told you to do everything it said, or the entire school would know your secret?

For Eric, ignoring that voice isn’t an option, not if he wants to make sure no one learns about what he’s hiding. Besides, what the voice asks him to do can’t be worse than if his secret did get out… right?

Eric isn’t the only one receiving these threatening phone calls. As the web continues to spread and the conspiracy deepens, we learn that everyone has a secret — some worse than others — and they’ll be willing to do just about anything to keep it that way.

‘Cold Calls’ Book Review

The mystery begins on page one, and from that moment on you will be sucked into Cold Calls by Charles Benoit. The pace is relentless, and as the story takes surprising twists and turns, you’ll find it increasingly difficult to put this book down even for just a moment.

Although the story focuses on three teenage high schoolers, the secrets they keep are nothing to laugh at. While some are certainly worse than others, all three have something to hide from their friends and family. And if those secrets got out? Relationships would be torn apart, hearts would be broken, and the consequences would be devastating.

With a solid mystery at the center of the book, everything else seems like icing on the cake. The characters have stand-out personalities and the situations they encounter are both realistic and frightening. This book poses the hard questions, and makes you question who’s right and who’s wrong. Who’s the bully and who’s the victim? Life doesn’t always give you straightforward answers, so expect Cold Calls to do you the same courtesy.
