Clueless is about to become the next iconic comedy to follow in the footsteps of Legally Blonde and Mean Girls!

According to Entertainment Weekly, a musical version of everyone’s favorite ’90s rom-com, Clueless, is gearing up to premiere in New York City.

The upcoming musical adaptation will officially hit the stage Off-Broadway as part of New Group theater’s 2018-2019 season, and will run from November through December of 2018.

One of the coolest things about Clueless, The Musical is that it was actually adapted by none other than Amy Heckerling herself.

The woman who served as writer and director on Clueless (which originally hit theaters back in 1995) also took it upon herself to adapt her beloved film for the stage. Given Heckerling’s involvement, we’re betting the stage musical is incredibly true to the story and characters we’ve all fallen in love with over the years.

Unlike Mean Girls and Legally Blonde, both of which boast original music, Clueless, The Musical falls under the category of what is commonly referred to as a jukebox musical.

Similar to the way that Mamma Mia! uses the preexisting music of ABBA to move the plot along, Clueless, The Musical will be using ’90s hits as parodies and monologues in order to bring the story of Cher, Dionne, and Tai to life.

Other names involved behind the scenes include Rock of Ages Tony Award nominee Kristin Hanggi, and two-time Tony nominee Kelly Devine. Hanggi and Devine have been tapped to direct and choreograph the show, respectively.

We’ll be interested to hear what those who check out the musical later this year have to say about what it was like seeing Clueless come to life on stage!
