Haven’t quite had your fill of Marvel shows? Not to worry, there’s a Cloak and Dagger series coming to television thanks to Freeform.
Unlike Marvel’s Most Wanted, which has only picked up a pilot order on ABC so far, Cloak and Dagger has already received a straight-to-series order according to Variety.
That’s a pretty confident commitment right off the bat for Freeform’s first venture into superhero territory. Though, considering the market they’re looking to target with the show — the 14-34 demo — and their recent success with the Shadowhunters? Maybe it’s not so surprising after all. It could be likely that the two shows will be paired together, when Shadowhunters returns for season 2.
“The live-action interracial romance follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness,” Variety said of what we can expect from Cloak and Dagger. “They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.”
This isn’t too far removed from their comic book origins, as Tyrone and Tandy meet as runaways in New York. Their latent mutant abilities are activated when they are rounded up by Dr. Simon Marshall and injected with a drug known as D-Lite — with a little magical interference as well. This, of course, won’t be a possibility on the show, but with Inhumans and powered vigilantes becoming the norm in Marvel television, we’ll likely see a riff on this situation.
However, one way in which this show will differ from its comic book counterpart is on the romance side — though they are partners, they are not romantically involved. It’ll certainly be an interesting shift from the often platonic, and sometimes one-sided, relationship they share on the page.
For now, there is no writer attached, but a search is apparently underway. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about the series, from the creative team to any casting announcements.
