If you watched America’s Got Talent last night, you probably laughed a bit when Cindy Chang took the stage. After all, she is a middle-aged, somewhat mousy-looking woman who told us in her interview that she is “mainly unemployed” and a housewife. We laughed even more when her childlike giggle floated off the stage, earning grins from Howie and a typical scowl from Piers.

But the laughing stopped when Chang began to sing. As the first notes of the “O Mio Babbino Caro” came out, a loud thud resounded as America’s jaws collectively hit the floor. While the song is admittedly overused in talent competitions due to its widespread recognition, Cindy Chang brought a level of talent that we have only seen a few times in this competition.

At the end of the song, Chang burst into tears, undoubtedly overwhelmed by both the experience and audience response. Piers gave a rare but enthusiastic standing ovation, while Sharon and Howie sat stunned at the table.

After receiving her three “yes” votes, sending her on to the next round in Vegas, Chang walked offstage, still visibly shaking to talk to Nick. Our favorite comment from Chang?

“I get to hug Nick Cannon!”

Watch out for Chang in the second round. In case you missed it, check out the video of her audition below.
