Cinderella’s birth mother in Disney’s live-action adaptation will be played by actress Hayley Atwell.

Atwell confirmed the news herself in a journal entry she wrote online for Harper’s Bazaar.

“I am about to start filming Kenneth Branagh’s new movie, ‘Cinderella,’ playing Cinderella’s biological mother at the beginning of the story, the embodiment of goodness and maternal love,” she wrote.

The following day, she wrote in a new entry, “I’ve had costume and wig fittings for Cinderella and then I jump back in the car and head to the theatre [for ‘The Pride’].”

While Atwell’s involvement appears to be somewhat small, she joins a star-studded cast made up of Lily James as Cinderella, Richard Madden as Prince Charming, Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother (who will first appear as an old beggar), and Cate Blanchett as an evil stepmother.

Can you see Atwell portraying the birth mother of James?

Cinderella will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and plans to start shooting in England by the end of this year. James is best known for her role on Downton Abbey as Lady Rose MacClare who has been upped to series-regular for the fourth outing. Madden is beloved for his role on Game of Thrones as Robb Stark.
