It looks like hit British drama Misfits is one step closer to American screens! A spec-script has been submitted to U.S. networks, penned by Josh Schwartz.

Rumours of a Misfits remake have been rife since the show became one of Hulu’s top series, when it was launched on the service back in June 2011.  Now it seems like the gritty British drama is edging closer to a mainstream American audience.

Deadline reports that a speculative script (a non-commissioned screenplay submitted by writers in the hopes that a network will produce it) has today been sent to several American television channels. In an interesting twist, the script is credited as being a collaboration between original Misfits creator Howard Overman and Josh Schawrtz, co-creator of Chuck and Gossip Girl.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, Misfits is a black-comedy/drama about a group of young teenagers who gain super powers after being hit by a freak lightning storm whilst on community service.

The prospect of a remake is already proving controversial, though. Lauren Socha, who plays the brash, opinionated Kelly in the series, has been sharing some negative opinions of her own. In a phone interview with The Huffington Post, Socha shares her thoughts on the proposed reboot.

“You know what? Without sounding disrespectful, ‘Misfits’ is ‘Misfits’,We’ve won the BAFTA. I’ve got a BAFTA. We don’t need to prove to anyone else. Obviously, they’re going to take it to a higher level, with a production team and stuff like that. If America wants to try and smash it, they can, but at the end of the day, they’ve got ‘Shameless’ and ‘The Office’ over there. Competition is absolutely nothing because with English telly, you start with something and then you leave it as that. And I think it’s going to be very difficult to try and get a job as Kelly in America. She’s so distinctive! I’m impossible to play! Good luck to it, though. I think I’ll be a bit gutted, but let’s see what they do.”
